“Green Boots” by Issa M. Lewis

Green Boots
After the unidentified climber on the Northeast ridge route of
Mount Everest

I.

The mountain’s only gift is

cold
face
breath
sharp
cold
feet
numb
fingers
cold

is the mountain’s only gift.

II.

When air is not air,

oxygen
comes
in
bottles
oxygen
fills
you
drink
oxygen

when air is not air.

III.

Up there in the snow, you lost your name.

You
slept
frozen
waiting
you
became
your
boots
you

you lost your name up there in the snow.
